This presentation explores innovative paving strategies that address growing stormwater management challenges and municipal impervious cover restrictions. We begin with an overview of permeable paving—why it’s needed and how it supports compliance with regulations. Next, we examine on-grade solutions, comparing traditional impermeable concrete slabs with permeable alternatives like Trass, suitable for pedestrian, vehicular, and decorative applications. We then shift to rooftops and balconies, reviewing current bonded buildups and pedestal systems, along with their limitations such as wind uplift and fall-through risks. Finally, we introduce permeable bonded buildups—a hybrid approach that combines the drainage benefits of pedestal systems with the stability of bonded assemblies. These solutions allow for taller floor assemblies, integration of radiant heating, and compatibility with 2cm porcelain or natural stone.
