Business Acumen Series: TECHNOLOGICAL ACUMEN
Over the past few months, we’ve been unpacking what it really means to run a smart, resilient tile contracting business. We started with Financial Acumen – understanding financial statements, managing budgets, keeping cash flow healthy, and making solid investment decisions. Then we explored Market Acumen, which helps us stay ahead of trends, understand customer needs, and keep a close eye on our competition and industry shifts.
These aren’t just abstract concepts. They shape the everyday decisions that impact our bottom line and our ability to grow. This month, we’re adding a new layer to that foundation – Technological Acumen.
Technology is no longer just nice-to-have, it’s essential. As contractors, we’re expected to deliver precision, efficiency, and excellence. And behind every straight grout line, every flawless finish, is a growing list of tools and tech that make those outcomes possible.
Tile isn’t what it was 40 years ago, and neither are the tools. Even the humble score-and-snap cutter has evolved to handle larger, denser materials with better accuracy and less waste. Laser layout systems now give us straight, consistent lines from the start. 3D laser scanners help us catch elevation changes before they become problems. Cordless suction cups make large-format tile safer and easier to handle. Moisture meters help us avoid costly callbacks when installing those sensitive underlayments. And self-leveling systems assist in achieving smooth floors in commercial spaces where flatness is critical.
But this shift isn’t just about gear – it’s about mindset. Knowing when to adopt new tools, how to use them effectively, and why they matter is what sets forward-thinking contractors apart. Technological Acumen means investing smartly, not chasing every new gadget.
The hands-on jobsite isn’t the only place where tech is changing the game. Project management software, digital estimating tools, 3D rendering programs, and mobile apps are helping us streamline operations, track costs, and improve communication. These platforms give us real-time visibility, helping us make faster, better decisions.
Technology moves fast, but the good news is, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Manufacturer trainings, online workshops, and product reps are all valuable resources. But the best resource? Each other. The NTCA community is where we share lessons learned, talk about what works, and discover new tools that actually move the needle. If you’re an NTCA Five-Star Accredited contractor and are attending the educational event in Nashville this month, I look forward to seeing you there. The NTCA staff has assembled an excellent agenda, and I am excited to expand and grow in knowledge together.
This month’s TileLetter focus is commercial applications, for which technology isn’t just helpful – it has become critical. From logistics to layouts, the right tech helps us reduce errors, manage large crews, maintain proper documentation and coordinate with other trades. In jobs where one mistake can mean major delays or cost overruns, Technological Acumen is a risk-management tool as much as a performance enhancer.
Next month, we’ll continue this series with Leadership Acumen – how great leadership drives culture, performance, and long-term success.
Until then – stay sharp, stay tech-savvy, and as always…
Educate for Excellence!
Sincerely,
Rod Owen
