Detailed Description

9:45 Thick bed mortar systems: Lead instructor provides group with an
introduction to the benefits of using a thick bed system as the substrate for a
tile installation.

10:00 Mini Session: Qualifying the Installation and Surface Preparation.
• Flat, plumb, level, square.
• Advantages of a thick mortar bed for floors and showers.

10:45 Mini Session: Thick Bed Mortar / Mud
• ANSI A108.01 and ANSI A108.1A / .1B / .1C
• Site mixes: Portland cement, sand, hydrated lime and various mix ratios
• Bag mixes: Introduction to bag mixes and reasons for using

11:00 Tour of displays and mockups

11:15 Hands on Session: Job site prep for floors. Break into small groups.
Instructors guide attendees to examine the substrate.
• Measuring and estimating quantities
• Minimum and maximum thickness
• Finding perimeter height, installing a perimeter movement joint, setting
screeds or points, proper reinforcement material.

12:45 Hands on Session: Site mix dry pack mud for floors (small groups)
• Mixing mud. Finding level / flat on perimeter. Setting screeds. Packing
mud. Minimum and maximum thickness. (TCNA F111 / F112)

2:15 Hands on Session: Bag mix dry pack mud for showers (small groups)
• Pre-slope / pitch requirements and methods (TCNA B415 / B421 / B422)
• Differences and advantages of a pre-slope or topical membrane
• Drain types, liners, membranes, curbs, walls

3:30 Wall flatness demonstration (full group)
• Lead instructor will explain proper vertical substrate preparation for
mortar bed on a vertical interior substrate. (TCNA W221 / W222)
• Master craftsman demonstration of installation of mortar bed on a
vertical substrate. (TCNA W221 / W222)
